Falastin: Films from Chapter III: The Mosaic Shattered: Exile & Resistance

Doors 6pm, Screening 7pm

This Saturday, April 5, at 7pm, please join us at CO-OPt Research + Projects for a special screening of select films and excerpts from the online exhibition Falastin. Chapter III: The Mosaic Shattered: Exile & Resistance is available online at Collecteurs.

We will begin the screening with the full length documentary film Foragers, by Jumana Manna (2022, 65 min), that visualizes and reconstructs the processes of theft and alienation produced by settler colonialism in Palestine, through the outlawing of foraging for wild native plants.

It will be followed by a selection of other films and video art. Akram Al-Ashqar’s film First Picture (2006, 26 min) follows a young boy, Nour, who was born in an Israeli prison. Huda Takriti’s Refusing to Meet Your Eye (2022, 10 min excerpt) examines how history is constructed through the selection of specific images and the loss of others. Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s Air Pressure (Diary of a Sky) (2023, 8 min excerpt) compiles skyscapes and audio recordings from Israeli fighter jets and drones flying over Lebanon, weaving together a thesis about the politics of sound and its connections to militarist power. The screening concludes with films by Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme: And Yet My Mask is Powerful (2016, 8 min), which follows a group of Palestinian youths who wander through the ruins of a destroyed village; and Collapse (2009, 8 min), an accelerating collage of black-and-white images conjuring a contemporary Palestinian landscape that an ongoing colonization of community, memory and narrative has ruptured.

Doors will open at 6pm and the screening will begin at 7pm. The total program is about 2 hours, but feel free to come and go!

The multi-part exhibition and historical timeline of Falastin: A Digital Monument is available to view in full online, Chapters I through III, on Collecteurs. Falastin emerges from the collective labor of Palestinian, Arab, Jewish, and allied artists, writers, cultural workers, and more than 300 volunteers from around the world. It is a historical timeline sourced from the Institute for Palestine Studies’ Interactive Encyclopedia of the Palestine Question along with additional contributions from the collective Working Class History. It is based on the unwavering conviction that only through a clear understanding of the past, by confronting the colonial injustices and reclaiming the narrative from the colonizers, can we collectively pave the way to a future where liberation is possible. Curation led by Àngels Miralda.
